According to the Centers for Disease Control:

• • More than 127,500 children 12 years of age and under were injured in motor vehicle accidents during 2013. During that same year, 638 children in the same age bracket died in motor vehicle accidents.
  • Thirty-eight percent of the children who died in car crashes during 2013, were not in a child safety seat or a seat belt at the time of the collision.
  • One study found that over 618,000 children from 0 to 12 years rode in a vehicle without a car seat, booster seat, or wearing a seat belt in one year.
  • Seat belt use reduces the risk of serious injury and death for older children by one half.
  • Using a booster seat reduces the risk of serious injury by forty-five percent for children four to eight years of age compared to using a seat belt alone.
  • Using a car seat reduces the risk of death to infants by seventy-one percent and by fifty-four percent for toddlers.
