ABC Action News in Tampa Bay reported last month on the tragic death of a driver and his girlfriend, and three other people, in a crash on Coconut Palm Drive at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The Florida Highway Patrol and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office were investigating the crash.
The driver of a VW Golf traveling west on MLK Jr. Boulevard approaching Coconut Palm Drive lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the median, and collided with a Toyota Sienna minivan traveling east on MLK Jr. Boulevard. After colliding with the Toyota Sienna, the VW Golf collided with a Toyota Scion and debris from the crash struck a BMW 3-series. The driver of the Golf and his passenger both died because of the crash. Three more people who were in the minivan also died.
It appears from a video posted on Snapchat that speed may have played a major factor in the crash. The video, available on the ABC Action News website shows that the vehicle was traveling 115.6 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
Snapchat And Other Traffic Accidents
This accident is not the first time the Snapchat app has been in use during a car accident. The Snapchat speed app allows a driver, or passenger as in the case above, to shoot a live video while they are driving. The video clocks the speed of the vehicle.
Snapchat’s speed filter is blamed for a crash in Atlanta, Georgia, which is the subject of a lawsuit against Snapchat. The lawsuit claims that the driver of the vehicle that caused the crash was using the app to boast about her speed. The vehicle she struck was thrown across four lanes into an embankment. The man in that vehicle suffered severe traumatic brain injury because of the collision. He has been unable to work, requires a wheelchair or a walker to get around, and has ongoing medical bills. His life was changed forever in that second.
It is unknown at this time what will come out of the Snapchat lawsuit. However, if more instances of crashes occurring while the driver is using the Snapchat speed app come to light, it will support the victims’ accusations that the app is encouraging people to speed and use social media while driving. The combination of speeding and using social media is certainly not limited to Snapchat. Thousands of car accidents occur each day due to distracted and speeding drivers.
Holding A Negligent Driver Responsible
As long as drivers continue to participate in reckless, negligent, and dangerous behaviors, innocent people are at risk. When a driver causes a collision, that driver can be held liable for any damages arising from that accident. Damages include economic losses such as lost income and medical bills. It also includes non-financial damages such as physical pain and emotional suffering.
